A decade-old piece of fanart just became DC canon — thanks to Babs Tarr’s Black Canary redesign

Hold on to your fan art, because you never know when it might come in handy. Just look at DC Comics artist Babs Tarr. Back in college, Tarr would submit designs to Project Rooftop, a fan website I co-founded years ago that invited artists to redesign classic superhero costumes. Now, one of the designs she did for Black Canary will be seen in her upcoming DC Black Label book Sirens: Love Hurts.

“I love Project Rooftop,” Babs Tarr tells Popverse. “I did a Black Canary [design]. They would pick a theme, like redesign this specific character’s costume, and everyone would submit, and then you would maybe get picked, and then you would get like a score. And I submitted for Black Canary, and I used elements from that design in her costume in the book.”

“Each girl has a different mood board and a style, and some of them wear the same costume, and some of them switch it up, or they have, like, different elements. Sometimes my Black Canary is on stage, so sometimes she doesn’t quite have time to suit up with the logo. It’s whatever she wore to rock out on stage.”
