Batman legend Greg Capullo was offered to draw an Absolute Batman arc, but says he's retired and "it's not the right fit" for his art

Scott Snyder says his New 52 Batman artist Greg Capullo has an open invitation to draw any issues of Absolute Batman he wants

Scott Snyder made his name with his 'New 52' era run on Batman, and for artist Greg Capullo he made his name again on that same run. After a rocky start, the two became fast friends and have went on to do several subsequent DC projects, as well as a creator-owned series. But when Snyder returned to DC for Absolute Batman, their collaboration ended — but their friendship, and desire to work together again someday still remained.

The thing that's changed though, is how popular Absolute Batman has become (even outselling their 'New 52' Batman run), and Capullo also deciding to quietly retire from drawing comics anymore, instead focusing on covers, conventions, and taking time with his wife. Despite that, when it came time for Absolute Batman  to revamp the villains group Court of Owls which Snyder and Capullo originally created together over a decade ago, Snyder revealed recently that Capullo was his first call to draw that guest arc.

It came about when Snyder originally asked Capullo to do variant covers for Absolute Batman.

“I did ask you,” Snyder protests. “I asked you just two months ago!" Snyder tells Capullo at a Megacon panel about the Absolute Batman cover offer. "And then you said, ‘I think I might.’ And then I talked to you about the Court of Owls.”

Capullo said that drawing the 'Court of Owls' arc of Absolute Batman was off, as he's not looking to do new comics pages.

“Yeah, well, that’s different. The Court of Owls is doing an interior," Capullo says.

Capullo goes on to say he's unsure if Absolute Batman fits his style and wonders if it’s better to make way for the next generation of artists.

“It’s not the right fit for my pencils, so I go, it’s too hard to build a new team at this point. So, that’s one of the things that’s bothered me. And then the new guard has arrived. There’s a lot of great new artists, and you guys don’t need me anymore.”

While Capullo is moving away from doing interiors, he still does lots of covers. Snyder said in the panel that Capullo should do a variant cover for every issue of Absolute Batman, which the fans in attendance cheered for.

“I don’t mind still doing some covers,” Capullo replies. At that point, the audience applauded again.
