After 47 years, one of DC's first Black superheroines, Vixen, is getting her first ongoing series from writer Stephanie Williams and artist Khary Randolph, and Williams is setting her sights on a 47-issue run, one for each year it took for Vixen to finally get her own ongoing.
"I really feel like it has a very good chance of actually making it to 25 issues. I would love an omnibus. My goal is to get to 47 issues if possible. 47 is the amount of years that Vixen has gone without an ongoing since her inception," Williams tells The Comic Pals.
"The other idea here is that I would love for the Vixen annuals to be a showcase for newer writers to come in and tell stories with this character," she adds. "So if this book is successful in the way that I really believe that it can, then that means that that annual will be another chance for newer voices and creators to jump on for people to discover them and then also for them to have something on their resume so they can hopefully branch off and do their thing."
Even though Vixen has had limited series and one-shots in the time since her introduction in 1981, Williams says the long awaited Vixen ongoing series is coming now because it's "the right time for it," and because DC has avoided "putting stuff out just to put it out." What's more, she says the title will be worth the wait as she's more prepared than ever for it.
"When there's an actionable plan behind it and all these other things that are important for a book to be successful, like right now I'm happy that this book is happening when it is, also because I'm a much much stronger writer than I was two years ago," she explains. "That allows me to do what I need to to make sure that you're getting your money's worth when you pick up Vixen."
Vixen #1 does not yet have an official release date.
