Of all his characters, Batman remains the most challenging Frank Miller character to bring to life in live action
People have flirted with the idea of a Dark Knight Returns movie over the years, but who would be brave and bold enough to do it properly.

Popverse's top stories
- The Amazing Digital Circus's Sean Chiplock credits the explosion of indie animation to companies like Warner Bros. & Disney treating their shows so poorly
- X-Men, Spider-Man, and more get absolutely dark, monstrous, and ultimately bloodthirsty in new Marvel Comics initiative
- The Boys S4 left Karl Urban restless, so he signed up for Mortal Kombat II
Frank Miller’s take on an older Batman pulled out of retirement has become one of the most influential and celebrated Batman comics of all time. The Dark Knight Returns and the various sequels Miller has worked on over the years have helped define the character for generations. You can see where directors like Christopher Nolan and Zach Snyder have borrowed aspects of the Frank Miller Batman in live action, but a full Dark Knight Returns adaptation might be the most challenging comic book movie to make.
That’s the impression we got when we spoke to Silenn Thomas, who has worked on multiple live action adaptations of Frank Miller comic books over the years. Currently, she is CEO of Frank Miller Ink and COO of Frank Miller Productions, which basically puts her right in the middle of the action when it comes to all the creative work Frank Miller does. We asked her what the most challenging of Miller’s works to bring to life has been, and she quickly brought up The Dark Knight Returns as something she hopes to see made.
“I’d say I would love to work on adapting his Batman faithfully and see how much fun we could have and dazzle all of you,” Thomas told us.
We’ve had pseudo-adaptations of The Dark Knight Returns in live action, most notably in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but we’ve never actually had a full-blown take on Frank Miller’s Batman on the big screen before. There are obvious barriers there, such as the brutality of this version of Gotham City and how Miller portrays Batman as older and more jaded than most viewers would probably be familiar with. However, that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t like to see someone try. Until then, we'll have to be content with the animated version.
Batman is the most well-known superhero in the world — surprisingly, given how much he loves hanging out in the dark. But between his comics, TV shows, movies, games, and more, DC's Dark Knight is the hero this city/country/world/universe needs, and we have all you need to enjoy him even more:
