Kickstarter's impact on independent creators is hard to overstate. You'll recall Popverse's reporting on the incredible success of indie 5E D&D campaign The Crooked Moon, or our interview with the head of Kickstarter's comics division, Sam Kusek. And if you haven't seen those, click either of those links and you'll see just how much the crowdfunding platform has transformed the history of indie art. Now, that history is about to add a new chapter, as we have learned of an ongoing strike by the Kickstarter employees' union.
The news comes from coverage by ICv2, which reports the reason for the strike is a breakdown in contract negotiations. Since 2022, Kickstarter employees have been working under a contract that was set to expire in July of 2025, negotiations surrounding which began in April of this year. Now, with the employees' union unsatisfied by the new contracts offered, a strike has been called, officially beginning back on September 26.
Where the negotiations broke down, reports ICv2, was at an impasse between the company and its employees regarding two major areas: firstly, the weekly hours worked, and secondly, the minimum wage at the company. Previously, those had stood at 32 hours and $85K per year, respectively, but now, Kickstarter's executives wish for a five-day workweek to be implemented. The union's proposal to keep the minimum wage, meanwhile, has not been accepted by the company.
This is an ongoing story, which Popverse will update as more information becomes available.
