Even when he’s trying to sort out his work-life balance, Jim Lee finds himself a busy man. Between drawing comics and serving as president, publisher, and CCO of DC Comics, he’s constantly spinning a lot of plates. However, he did recently turn down a high-profile television appearance on The Masked Singer, not because of how much they were willing to pay him but because he was worried he’d be so bad that it would overshadow everything else he’s ever done.

During the Jim Lee Spotlight Panel at San Diego Comic Con 2026, the prolific comic book artist talked about the possibility of him appearing on TV or in films. Lee quickly dismissed the idea because he is such an atrociously bad actor that he didn’t want to “burden a filmmaker or showrunner that much.” That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been offered a spot on TV shows before. Jim Lee explained that he turned down a chance to be on The Masked Singer because he was worried it would go viral for all the wrong reasons.

“Another thing is the Masked Singer. Have you guys ever seen that show?” Jim Lee began. “They offered. They said, ‘Do you wanna come on and dress up and sing?’ Yeah, and I said, ‘No!’ I am tone deaf. Whatever I can do art-wise, I can’t do singing-wise.” 

Turns out, appearing on The Masked Singer has plenty of monetary perks to consider.

“And he says, ‘We’ll pay you $75,000.’ And I said, ‘Even worse! No!’ If you pay me that, I feel like I have to deliver $75,000 worth of performance and, ultimately, my biggest fear is that it would have gone viral because it would have been so bad… and that that’s what I would be forever known as rather than someone that is an artist. I know my place.”

That being said, Jim Lee's appearance on Sesame Street still holds up.
