Celebrate the late Octavia E. Butler with a glimpse inside the comic book version of her prescient dystopian novel, Parable of the Talents

Creators Damian Duffy, John Jennings, and David Brame have brought Octavia E. Butler's 1998 novel Parable of The Talents to comics and we have an exclusive look inside on the anniversary of Butler's birth

Octavia E. Butler is a science fiction icon — a multiple award-winning author known for works including the Lilith’s Brood trilogy, Kindred, and essays on race and feminism, she was the first SF author to be rewarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 1995. On the anniversary of her birth, Popverse is proud to present a look inside a new graphic novel adaptation of one of her most famous works: 1998’s Parable of the Talents.

The second half of Butler’s esteemed Parable series, Parable of the Talents remains an unfortunately timely read — it follows the journey of a preacher’s daughter who believes that humanity’s destiny is to travel into space, while the United States is controlled by fascists working under the pretense of transforming the county into a Christian fundamentalist nation. (The slogan of the President in the novel is “Make America Great Again”; this book was written in 1998, remember.)

“Octavia E. Butler wrote Parable of the Talents as a warning for the future,” Damian Duffy, who wrote the adaptation of this novel (and its predecessor, Parable of the Sower) said in a statement. “Adapting Parable of the Talents from within the future she warned of has been a surreal and humbling journey. Fortunately, David Brame and John Jennings brought their significant artistic talents to bear, drawing images to help us move past dystopia, and down the path to hard won hope.”

Featuring art by John Jennings and David Brame, the 304-page graphic novel adaptation of Parable of the Talents is set to bring the unexpectedly topical story to a new audience when they need it the most. Take a look at our preview below.

Parable of the Talents: A Graphic Novel Adaptation, published by Abrams ComicArts, is available digitally and in bookstores now.
