Batman artist Jorge Jiménez wants to keep trying something new and iconic for DC's Dark Knight
Jorge Jiménez is already the primary Batman artist for a generation - but he's always trying to outdo himself

Is there a more difficult task in all of comics than trying to do something different with a character who’s been around for almost a century, and been iconic for almost all of that time? Probably not — but for Batman artist Jorge Jiménez, that’s not going to stop him trying to create something different each and every time.
“I’m always trying to do some new thing,” Jiménez told the audience at the DC Comics - Gotham City panel at New York Comic Con 2025, adding, ”I always try to see new inspirations, different ways. For this time, with this writer, I thought it was maybe better to do something more synthetic.”

That extended to the eyecatching cover of the first issue, which was an intentional attempt to create a “memorable and iconic” image that fans would remember afterwards — which meant that Jiménez and colorist Tomeu Morey wanted to create a “flat” image without too much rendering to signify the rebirth of the character visually.
(We’re reminded about the buzz that Todd McFarlane’s Batman had when he took on the character briefly in 1987 — that massive cape! — which has since become iconic enough to be celebrated with its own con-exclusive variant cover.)
“It’s been cool to do something different,” the artist said about his efforts with the new flagship title, adding that he’s excited to live up to the “quality of people” he’s collaborating with on the title, especially writer Matt Fraction.
Batman #1 and 2 are currently available, with the first issue having already sold more than half a million copies, suggesting that they’re not only doing something right, but that a lot of people are enjoying their efforts.
New York Comic Con 2025 continues through Sunday, October 12.
