Marvel is leaning into its own mythology and suggesting a new holiday for fans - does anyone else want to celebrate 616 Day?
In the pages of Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1, a new Marvel holiday has arisen: 616 Day

What's the most important number in Marvel Comics? 616, probably. As the number that distinguishes the Earth of the main Marvel Universe from the rest of the Earths in the multiverse, "616" has become a calling card for both the heroes of Marvel Comics and comic book readers. Now, it looks like Marvel Comics is keen on making June 16 a new holiday called 616 Day to honor the significance of Earth-616.
In a story entitled "616 Day" from Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Al Ewing, Mark Buckingham, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Caramagna, Peter Parker wakes up at 6:16 AM on June 16 (6/16 if you're American) and has anything but a normal day. The webhead must team up with noted "magic guy" Wyn (from Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti's G.O.D.S. series) in order to, you guessed it, save Earth-616 and its entire timeline. In this case, from a cosmic being called an Eternivore.
The specifics of the story don't matter here so much as the sentiment that's behind the story. Once Wyn and Spidey save Earth-616's place in the multiverse, Peter says his universe is "one big neighborhood" that's worth "celebrating" because "it's 616 Day." The story closes with Eternity wishing us all a "Happy 616 Day," just in time for us in the real world to experience it this Monday. Clearly, this is something Marvel Comics would love for us to catch onto in our world.
So what does 616 Day actually celebrate about the Marvel Universe? I suppose that would be its multiverse, or Spider-Verse, or whatever you want to call it, that it has no interest in pumping the brakes on. Maybe I'm old, tired, and have nearly enough first cousins to fill out an NFL team roster (not first cousins once removed, or second cousins. I'm talking only first cousins), but I miss when things just happened in the Marvel Universe without the multiverse getting involved. I've got so much to keep track of already, so many names of people. I don't want to worry about timelines when I've barely got a handle of what's going on anyways. I yearn for the day where I can read a story about Spider-Man encountering a problem without getting possessed by the spirit of Marvin Gaye, bursting out into a rendition of "What's Going On?"
Anyways, happy 616 Day to all who celebrate. I envy you.
