Popverse Picks: The best Invincible characters (according to me!)

Sorry Mark, but the best Invincible characters are behind you.

For 14 years, the Invincible comic book series billed itself as "the best superhero comic book in the universe" and ... well, it's hard to argue. Now with Amazon's Prime Video animated adaptation Invincible coming to us every year and creators Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley returning for more comics this summer, it's high time, overdue even, for me to decide who are my favorite characters in the hundreds they have made.

Maybe you should too... and tell us in the comments.

In this week's Popverse Picks, I revisit the original Invincible series which I bought from #1 to the end, and explore it in the context of Prime Video's Invincible animated series and the upcoming return of the Invincible comics universe to figure out once and for all who my favorite characters are.

I apologize in advance, Mark. But it's not you, it's me.

Favorite Invincible characters: Battle Beast

I'll say it: I like Battle Beast more than Invincible. Sorry, but this tale of an alien space warrior who looks like a lion with nobility and the war-like skills to back it up speaks to me. Maybe it's because I love Klingons. Either way, I'm glad he's beginning to show up in the cartoon - and I'm even more glad Kirkman and Ottley are returning to Invincible for a spin-off series this May with Invincible Universe: Battle Beast.

Favorite Invincible characters: Monster Girl

Monster Girl is the definition of the book is more than the cover. Originally introduced as a literal girl who becomes a monster, her character development by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker over the years and the idea that using her powers causes her to physically de-age in her human form - while still being the same age on the inside - is one of my favorite character arcs in the comic book series, and the animated series seems to be going there as well.

Favorite Invincible characters: Brit

I actually saw Brit before I knew he was in Invincible. I first met Brit out of his three OGNs Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman did with his The Walking Dead co-creator Tony Moore. Miles away from the the zombie hordes you know them for, Moore's rendition of the old soldier known as Brittany presaged old-man Clint Eastwood - and if I could say it, is the Clint Eastwood of superheroes. Before Old Man Eastwood, before Old Man Logan, there was Brit.

In the Invincible animated series, he's gleefully interpreted by grizzly voice actor Jonathan Banks - and I hope we can see more of him in the future. Perhaps a Guarding the Globe spinoff with Brit in charge?

Invincible may have already cast big bad guy Thragg for season 4 - could he be another Walking Dead alum? Robert Kirkman might be teasing the answer...
