Marvel is mistreating Cable says co-creator Rob Liefeld, but he's given up on doing anything with the character ever again

Rob Liefeld isn't looking back at his Marvel creations - especially Cable.

Don’t expect to see Rob Liefeld writing or drawing a Cable comic anytime soon. Or perhaps, ever again? Though it was Liefeld that first created and drew the modern Cable (and scripted by the great Louise Simonson) as we know him all the way back in 1989, the prolific writer and comics legend took the time at San Diego Comic Con 2025 to tell fans he was done with ol’ Nathan Summers.

The topic came up after a fan attending Liefeld's Comic-Con International: San Diego 2025 panel asked the artist/writer if he would ever touch on the Cable/Stryfe storyline ever again. And as is his nature, Rob gave a completely honest answer.

"You know," began Liefeld, "Here's the deal with Cable: I have said all I'm going to say. Last year at this time, Marvel was like, ‘Rob's going to do a 40th Anniversary; Rob's going to do a Cable story.’ And I said, ‘No, I'm done, I'm done. I said all I'm going to say with Cable.’"

"I think I did a good job," he continued, "I took a character that nobody knew existed, and within 18 months, took him to the top of the charts. And there was a whole lot of great story. But now, Cable, he's in [Marvel’s] hands, I wish they would make him a little bit more of a priority. I wish they would treat him a little bit better. I wish they treated him like I wanted them to."

Jumping off of this, Liefeld brought up the falling out he had with the House of Ideas in the early '90s, a falling out that was part of what led to Liefeld cofounding Image Comics.

"If you think [the falling out] wasn’t personal," concluded Liefeld, "What went down in the '90s, you're not paying attention. I'm not a weird guy. It wasn't supposed to happen to me; I was the wrong guy. Even people I looked up to were like, ‘Anybody but that guy.’ I don't know. I don't know why I'm controversial."
