Popversations: Ronda Rousey fights her way into the world of comics with Expecting the Unexpected from AWA

Ronda Rousey is an Olympic medalist, UFC and WWE champion, actress, and now a comic book writer with Expecting the Unexpected

Ronda Rousey has an incredibly impressive résumé. She's an Olympic bronze medalist, mixed martial artist, professional wrestler, actress, and now, a comic book writer. Rousey has authored a graphic novel from AWA called Expecting the Unexpected, about a hit-woman who gets pregnant after sleeping with a potential target. The artist on the book is veteran Mike Deodato Jr., known for his work on books like The Flash, Wonder Woman, and New Avengers.

At New York Comic Con 2025, our video producer Ashley Victoria Robinson sat down with Ronda Rousey to discuss her break into comics and everything she's learned about the form in bringing Expecting the Unexpected to life. Rousey revealed that she originally wrote the story in screenplay form before Axel Alonso, former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, helped her adapt it to a comic book script. You can watch the interview below.
