Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman turns his attention to epic fantasy for a new series that's "impossible to overhype"

Skinbreaker, an eight issue comic book series by Robert Kirkman and David Finch, will begin September 2025

When Robert Kirkman creates a new comic book series, it’s an event. In the past, he’s created The Walking Dead, Invincible, and more — including his last comic book creation Void Rivals, the series that secretly rebooted Hasbro’s G.I. Joe and Transformers into the best-selling Energon Universe. This fall, he’s teaming up with fan-favorite Moon Knight and Batman artist David Finch for a new fantasy epic that Kirkman promises is “impossible to overhype.”

Skinbreaker is, in the words of Skybound Entertainment, “the story of a people on the verge of collapse and their fight for survival as the many threats they face close in for the kill.” As Kirkman put it in a statement, it’s a series that “is a high-water mark for both our careers. An action epic that is unrelentingly brutal but also contains a ton of emotion and heart. It’ll shock you and make you cry.”

Speaking about his co-creator on the title, Kirkman added, “David Finch is one of the greatest comic artists to ever live. This is the artist who made Moon Knight outsell Batman. Even a casual glimpse at any of his work in Skinbreaker will prove to you that this is historic material. His work on this series has to be seen to be believed. It would be impossible to overhype it.” Thankfully, Skybound accompanied this statement with a preview from the first issue of the series, so you can see it to believe it:

For his part, Finch added, “Skinbreaker is a labor of love. It’s a story that resonated very deeply for me, and it’s been the privilege of my career to help bring it to life. Everyone involved has put every last ounce of effort into this book and I couldn’t be more excited and proud to finally share it with you.”

The eight-issue series launches September 24, 2025, and will be released in two editions — one regular comic book size, and an oversized Treasury Edition, to display Finch’s work to its best effect.
