Cover artist Artgerm's favorite DC character is Supergirl - but only because of the CW show and Melissa Benoist
The cover artist turned his love for Supergirl into a six-issue variant cover run for DC all because he loved the CW show so much.

Despite being one of the most prolific variant cover artists at both DC and Marvel, Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau wasn’t originally a fan of most of the characters from Western comics. He’s admitted that he is more of a fan of anime and manga; in fact, he wasn’t introduced to his favorite DC character through the comics. Instead, he fell in love with Supergirl after seeing her TV show on the CW and turned that love into a variant cover run of her comic.
“Supergirl is my favorite DC comic character,” Artgerm explained at his MCM Comic Con 2025 panel. “The reason why I love it, not because I grew up with Supergirl, but I started watching Supergirl the TV series with my wife. And we love it so much, and one day she asked me, ‘Why don’t you just draw something for Supergirl as a cover run?’ I said, ‘Yeah. I think I should.’”
For most people, that would be something of a whimsical pipedream, but Artgerm has built plenty of connections with DC over the years thanks to doing some of the most popular and collectible variant covers for the company.
“So when I met up with the editor from DC and he asked me what would I like to work on, I said, ‘I would like to work on Supergirl.’ That’s how I started my first cover run with Supergirl.”
It is a testament not just to the power of shooting your shot but also to how good the CW’s Supergirl show ended up being. Not only did it expand the Arrowverse in a new direction, but it also inspired Artgerm to do a variant cover run.
