Sorry, Batman: Tom King's two favorite DC characters to write aren't who you think (and he admits one is based on their Justice League Unlimited version)

Tom King has written characters in just about every corner of the DC Universe - from Gotham City, to the Green Lantern Corps, to the New Gods, to even the world of Watchmen. With such a broad breadth of the DC Universe under his belt, you might wonder who his favorite characters are to write. After all, regardless of which character he's writing, there's always a sense of passion that underlies King's work.

In an interview with our own Ashley Victoria Robinson as part of our Popversations series, Tom King revealed the two DC characters who bring him the most joy behind the keyboard.

"Hal Jordan and Booster Gold are the two characters I have the most fun writing in DC," King tells Popverse. "And just to be clear, I write Booster wrong. I have talked to Dan Jurgens [the creator of Booster Gold], I apologized to him. Dan writes him much more heroically as an underdog hero, which I think is very cool, and Dan invented Booster and deserves that.

"I write the Booster that's from the cartoon, the Justice League Unlimited and Justice League Action cartoon, who is also a hero, but is also a little more buffoonery, and always has the best intentions and trips over them."

Throughout his career King hasn't been afraid to write heroes from across the DC Universe through a different lens, like Guy Gardner in King and Greg Smallwood's Human Target limited series. These fresh characterizations are motivated by the stories the characters are appearing in. That is, there's a reason within the story for why the characters are being written that way.

Dan Jurgens is still the reigning champ of Booster Gold (just look at his and Ryan Sook's 2021 Blue and Gold series if you don't believe me, you'll scream from laughing), but it's good to see ol' Boostie get some love from other writers.
