Marvel is sneaking in a surprise X-Men comic that sets up a 10-year time jump into the future with an "insidious" mutant utopia

The Marvel Universe of 10 years in the future will be teased in the surprise title available next week starring the X-Men and other Marvel heroes

When it comes to Marvel’s X-Men, the future has started earlier than expected. The publisher has revealed that a special prelude issue to its big fall storyline, ‘Age of Revelation’ will be “shadow dropped” to select retailers without warning, offering a sneak peek at the world to come for all things X.

Here’s how Marvel describes the storyline, which gets its official start this October: “Age of Revelation takes current X-Men storytelling 10 years into the future. After being welcomed onto Cyclops’ X-Men with open arms, Revelation set out on the impossible task that Apocalypse entrusted him with: creating a world where only the fittest survived. With his linguistic mutant power amplified to an astonishing new level, Doug commands Earth itself with his voice, reshaping it as a utopian haven for mutantkind. It’s a mutant homeland built on an insidious lie, spreading across the planet and wiping out humanity until it becomes a mutant homeworld!”

The storyline isn’t just going to reshape the world, it’ll reshape Marvel’s publishing plans, with the company announcing that it’ll see all-new titles replace existing comic book series, with new titles announced including:

  • Amazing X-Men
  • Unbreakable X-Men
  • Expatriate X-Men
  • The Last Wolverine
  • Binary
  • Cloak or Dagger
  • Iron Frost
  • Laura Kinney: Sabretooth
  • Longshots
  • Omega Kids
  • Radioactive Spider-Man
  • Rogue Storm
  • Sinister’s Six
  • Undeadpool
  • X-Vengers
  • X-Men: Book of Revelation

(For anyone experiencing deja vu, yes, this is a mirror to the replacement publishing plans for the classic X-Men storyline Age of Apocalypse, which also replaced regular comics with new titles for a temporary period; not coincidentally, that storyline celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.)

X-Men: Age of Revelation #0, a preview issue for the storyline will be available via retailers next week, with a select number receiving limited edition versions via “shadow drop,” which is Marvel’s teminology for a surprise shipment. Store owners can order copies as of today, so any fan wanting to pick one up, do so quickly.

Expect more information on X-Men: Age of Revelation in the coming weeks — and get ready to see what the future of Marvel’s mutants looks like this October.
