Zatanna gets a new magical job at DC Comics — plus a brand-new monthly series

DC Comics' mistress of magic gets her own ongoing monthly comic in April as part of the Next Level line of books

2026 is looking like it could be Zatanna’s year. Not only is a revamped version of DC’s mistress of magic showing up in Absolute Wonder Woman starting this month, but she’ll also be getting her own ongoing comic book as part of DC Next Level, starting in April. We’re not fooling.

Following up on his six issue miniseries starring the character in 2025, writer/artist Jamal Campbell will be handling the creative chores on the new series as Zatanna Zatara, stage-magician-turned-superhero, finds herself struggling with her new responsibilities as the Prime Magus of the DC Universe. What kinds of responsibilities, you ask? Well, nothing major… just guiding the use of magic throughout the world. What could possibly go wrong?

DC’s description of the series suggests that Zatanna isn’t going to be sweating too much, however: “How will she accomplish this grand task? How will she shoulder this heaviest of responsibilities? How will she confront the horrors waiting in forgotten histories? With a wink, a flourish, and a whole lot of magic!”

Zatanna is the latest addition to the DC Next Level line, intended as a way to bring the excitement of the Absolute Universe into core DC canon. The first issue of the series will feature covers from Campbell, Jorge Corona, Adam Hughes and Kyuyong Eom; you can see them in the gallery below.

Zatanna #1 will be released April 29.
