Could Star Trek's first female captain be headed back to the screen?

Star Trek fans who want to see Janeway return to the live action Star Trek franchise got some unexpected hope at New York Comic Con 2022.

Fans have gotten to see an animated version of Kate Mulgrew’s Admiral Janeway in the Nickeolodeon show Star Trek: Prodigy, but at New York Comic Con 2022, executive producer Alex Kurtzman teased that something more might be coming for the fan-favorite Star Trek: Voyager character — and in live action.

During the Star Trek Universe panel at the Javits Center on Saturday afternoon, a fan asked Kurtzman — who oversees the entire Star Trek franchise as a whole at Paramount+, from Prodigy to Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. — whether or not there’s a chance that Kate Mulgrew would return to play the character onscreen in person, as opposed to animated form.

In the silence that followed while Kurtzman considered what to say, Mulgrew teased that she, too, was waiting for an answer… and perhaps because she knew just what he was about to say. “Things have been talked about. That’s all I’m going to say,” he said, eventually… and then, immediately, said even more. “Nothing could make me happier than to bring Janeway back. There’s an idea that may be in play.”

While fans consider the possibility of seeing more live-action Janeway, they might also want to check out the animated version in the just-released trailer for the upcoming new episodes of Star Trek Prodigy, launching October 22 on Paramount+.
