The popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3 was a big surprise for Gale Dekarios actor Tim Downie

In 2024 Baldur’s Gate 3 won the Game of the Year award for the Golden Joystick Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards, the DICE Awards, the BAFTAs, and The Game Awards. According to a 2023 investor’s call, the game earned Hasbro over $90 million. Oh, and the critics loved it too, with various gaming journalists giving the role-playing video game high marks.
Needless to say, Baldur’s Gate 3 was a big success. However, the actors behind the game didn’t realize just how big the game was until they went to their first convention.
“It surprised all of us,” Gale Dekarios actor Tim Downie says during a panel at Florida Supercon. “And that’s not even a word of a lie. We assumed that people who played indie and are into fantasy and role-playing, they would enjoy it. That seems to be the demographic, that seems to be quite a safe platform to put that on.”
“The moment that we realized that this was something utterly completely different was when we did the first London Comic Con about two months after it had been released. All six of us were there in the same room for the very first time. None of us had ever been in the same room together all six of us at one time. For some of us, we were just like, ‘Oh my god, you’re playing them. I didn’t know that.’”
“We had our panel, and they had to move the panel to the big room, which seats about 3,000 people. And then when we talked that first time, it absolutely took everyone’s breath away. All of us were just kind of completely left dumbfounded as like the scale of this game. So no, we had no idea, and I didn’t have any idea until I walked on this stage and I was like, ‘Oh this is different and this is new.’ That for me was the thing.”
