When Tim Downie was cast as Gale Dekarios for Baldur’s Gate 3, he didn’t know anything about the character he was auditioning for, or the name of the game. Everything was secretive. The only clue he was given was a picture of Henry Cavill.
“I was rung up by my agent and they said, ‘What are your thoughts on video games?,’” Downie recalls during a panel at Florida Supercon. “I was like, ‘Oh, I love video games.’ They’re like, ‘Oh, that’s good. We would like you to audition for a part in this video game.’ ‘Oh, okay. What’s it called?’ ‘We can’t tell you that.’ ‘Oh, okay. What’s the part?’ ‘Well, they’re not too sure. It might be a wizard.’”
When Downie asked for the audition pages, he was surprised to see a picture of Henry Cavill included as a reference.
“My page was a picture of Henry Cavill. I was like, ‘I can do Henry Cavill. He’s English. I’m English. It speaks for itself.’ So, they said, ‘It’s a little bit like this, and it’s a bit like that, but it’s a wizard, so something along those lines.’ And it was a very hot summer, and I had to record it and I had to go upstairs and into my daughter’s bedroom. It is the only place where it was kind of quiet, away from kids, and quite blank.”
“I recorded it and kind of thought, ‘Okay, Henry Cavill. How would Henry Cavill play a wizard? How would he do this?’ And then you throw it. You throw it into the void and you think, ‘Well, that was nice. That was a nice afternoon. Now I’m going to go downstairs and watch telly.’”
It was almost three years until Downie would learn that his role was Gale Dekarios for the role-playing video game Baldur’s Gate 3. The next time you play the game, listen to Downie’s performance and see if you can catch a little bit of that Cavill influence.
