Chrono Trigger remake? Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii is out here giving fans hope that it's really in the works

"I can't talk about that," Yuji Horii told a Japanese panel show when asked about a potential Chrono Trigger remake.

We’re going to sound like a broken record here, but Chrono Trigger really is a great game. A great enough game that many people are wondering why we haven’t had anything new from the series in years. We’ve spoken several times – including to Square Enix staff – about the possibility of a Chrono Trigger remake or sequel, but Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has gone and given us all a bit of hope.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger, which has led to Square Enix making a few announcements to celebrate that milestone. However, they’ve always stopped short of giving us what we all want: a proper remake for modern consoles. Yuji Horii is one of the few people who might know about a Chrono Trigger remake. He was an initial member of the Dream Team who worked on the original game, including Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and Dragon Ball mangaka Akira Toriyama.

While on a recent panel show in Japan, Horii was asked about the possibility of a new Chrono Trigger project. Instead of outright denying it, the developer became quite flustered, saying things like, “I can’t talk about that!” and “Wait, if I say that, you’ll figure it out!” Horii claims that he could “get in trouble” if fans read too much between the lines.

There is always the very real possibility that this is all a big joke playing off of fan excitement surrounding the Chrono Trigger anniversary. However, we’re going to live in the hope that Square Enix has heard our constant requests and will finally give fans what they’ve been asking for: a proper Chrono Trigger remake.
