Critical Role's Laura Bailey began Campaign 4 with one heartbreaking hope - that she could save Thjazi Fang

Would enough Nat20s have saved Thjazi Fang from GM Brennan Lee Mulligan's tragic schemes? Maybe not, but that didn't stop Thimble, AKA Laura Bailey, from wishing

Critical Role Campaign 4 began with the words "Someone you love very much is about to die." That someone became Orcish revolutionary Thjazi Fang, whose execution sets into motion everything that's transpired across these past 24 episodes (as of this writing) of D&D liveplay. But even if most of the players had come into the game accepting poor Thjazi's fate, there was at least one core cast member who held onto hope until the very last moment:

Campaign 4's pixie rogue Thimble, AKA Laura Bailey.

Bailey and partner Travis Willingham were recent interviewees over at ComicBook.com, where they touched on everything from The Mighty Nein season 2 to hit video game Dispatch to, of course, the currently-running Critical Roe core campaign, GM'd by Dimension 20's Brennan Lee Mulligan.

"I just felt this immediate connection to the story that Brennan was telling," Bailey said of her earliest conversations with the GM, "I mean, even before we started the stream, I was in love with the character of Thjazi. I was so excited to be a part of that story."

That love for the character wasn't a thing of the past, either. As the opening moments of the first episode played, Bailey truly wondered if there was action she could take to save his life.

"I knew Brennan told everyone that this was going to start with an execution," the Marvel's Spider-Man star explained, "That Thjazi’s going die. But he did tee it up so that maybe we could stop it; I was certain we could. I was like, 'Listen, if I roll a 20 at the right times, I’m going be able to get him out. I know it. Brennan’s just gonna have to rewrite everything because Thjazi is gonna survive.' I really, really thought I had a genuine shot!"

But as it turns out, Thimble's introduction to the game would end up being after the pivotal execution had already taken place.

"Then Brennan made me wake up," Bailey concluded, "And he was already dead. [...] I was devastated!"

Damn, Brennan. That's cold.

With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:

...and much, much more. Roll initiative, player. Magic awaits.
