In late May 2025, EA made the announcement that they were shutting down another of their studios. This time it was Cliffhanger Games who were working on a Black Panther video game as part of a three-game deal with Marvel. Despite that project being officially canceled, EA remains committed to developing at least three video games based on Marvel characters, with them now development a new third game to replace the seemingly defunct Black Panther game.
The closure of Cliffhanger Games raised multiple questions about the relationship between EA and Marvel, who signed a deal for three games based on the latter’s comic book library. Iron Man was always intended to be the first game in that agreement, with Black Panther meant to be the second and a hitherto unannounced game as the third. Would EA still honor that agreement with Marvel? It looks like the answer is yes.
“Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues,” EA Entertainment president Laura Miele said in a statement sent to IGN after the news that the Black Panther game would no longer be made.
Similarly, Marvel sent the site a statement that said, “The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA, a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters, remains strong. Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel’s Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios.” Later, the Marvel spokesperson confirmed that EA would still be developing three games based on Marvel characters despite the cancellation of the Black Panther game.
This means that there are still two unannounced Marvel games to come from EA in the future in addition to Motive’s Iron Man game. Other studios are also working on games based on Marvel characters. Skydance’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Insomniac’s Wolverine, and Arkane Lyon’s Blade are all in various stages of development.
