Sequels like Ghost of Yotei can be a risky proposition. It takes place in a totally different region and years after its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima. However, developers Sucker Punch have figured out a way to give closure to fans of the first game by revealing how original protagonist Jin Sakai’s story ends – provided you can find the right side quest to complete.
Some minor spoilers for Ghost of Yotei are ahead.
Once you’ve gained access to the Oshima Coast in Ghost of Yotei, you can find a quest called 'The Storm Blade.' This quest sends Atsu on a journey to find a weapon attributed to a legendary warrior, but it doesn’t immediately reveal who the original owner was.
After completing the quest and recovering the sword, the storyteller Ugetsu explains that the sword belonged to a legendary warrior who was forced to abandon his samurai code to stop his home from being invaded by the Mongols. He became an outlaw who fled his home and spent his last days near Mount Yotei. Though he was a hero, this warrior’s story was outlawed by the Shogun, effectively erasing him from the history books.
This is a tragic end to the story of Jin Sakai, who was already a tragic figure in Ghost of Tsushima as he had to effectively abandon his morals to become the hero his people needed at the time. In Ghost of Yotei, Atsu finds a haiku written by Jin that describes his loneliness as he lives in isolation, exiled from his home for doing what he thought was right.
