God of War star Christopher Judge squashes the imaginary beef between him and original Kratos actor T.C. Carson, and how much he respects him

Christopher Judge felt immense pressure replacing T.C. Carson as Kratos in God of War

Replacing a fan favorite actor is never easy. It’s even harder when that actor was part of a best-selling video game franchise with a devoted fanbase.

When Christopher Judge was announced as the new Kratos for Sony’s God of War franchise, fans were skeptical. T.C. Carson, who did voice work and motion capture for Kratos in the first three games, was popular, and players didn’t immediately take to Judge when he was announced at the 2016 E3 Expo.

“When I was announced, it wasn’t like everyone went 'Yay!',” Judge recalls during a Florida Supercon panel. “They were like, ‘Fuck this, let’s boycott.’ It was a real uneasy time. And then I went back and stupidly watched what T.C. did. And I was like, ‘Oh my god, they’re going to hate me.’”

Judge went on to say that the God of War series is where it is today because of Carson.

“We’re here because of T.C. Carson. I make no balls about that. I don’t know why the idea of whoever tried to make it like there was some rift between us or something like that. I had T.C. and his mother in Vancouver long before any of this, and he’s one of the most wonderful, beautiful, giving, loving human beings I’ve ever met. Every day that we were on set, T.C. was with us.”

Judge recalled the time Carson visited Sony’s offices for a God of War 20th anniversary event. According to Judge, it was an emotional experience that cemented Carson’s legacy.

“All the devs come in, and they had put together a trailer kind of mashing up T.C. and I. We both started crying. I was crying because this man who is so beloved had no idea of what place he holds at Sony. Just to see him receive it was one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever been a part of.”
