How fatherhood plays a big part in God of War for Christopher Judge (both professionally and personally)

When Christopher Judge was cast as Kratos for Sony’s God of War, he didn’t realize just how much the role would resonate with him. Judge would return to play the character in the 2022 sequel God of War Ragnarok, which caused him to reflect on his life as a father, and how it mirrored Kratos’s journey with Atreus.
“Both these games kind of mirror my own life,” Judge says during a panel at Florida Supercon. “As I’ve said many times, the first game for me was a love letter and an apology to my children. When you’re a kid, you don’t know. It doesn’t matter if your dad is working or your dad is whatever. All you know is daddy’s not home. And that dynamic for Kratos to have not been there for Atreus and then to try to change who he is for the better, it very much was how I felt as a man and a father, that I wasn’t there for so much of my kid’s early childhood.”
Judge candidly shared the regrets he had as a father and how some moments with Kratos hit close to home. “I never saw any of [my kids] first steps, never heard any of their first words, because I was working. But to a child, it doesn’t matter; you’re just not there. So truly, that’s what it was for me. I had been this man who lived one way my entire life. I decided to change how I lived my lif,e and it’s still hard for me to accept that I have found this place where I’m accepted or celebrated.”
“It’s still very hard for me to wrap my head around it. That scene where Kratos sees the triptych at the end, where he’s being celebrated, for me was the perfect encapsulation of my own journey. It was truly a symbiotic relationship where hopefully I gave it as much as the game gave me.”
