Magic: The Gathering’s Edge of Eternities Special Guest cards look damaged on purpose

If you play Magic: The Gathering, or really any TCG in general, you love a nice, clean, crisp edge to your cards. Case in point: as an adult, I found my Pokémon card binders from when I was a kid, and recoiled at the sight of how damaged the edges of the cards were from younger me shuffling them around and being careless. I've made peace with how beat up my Pokémon cards are (they're well-loved), but it's been a journey.

As if Magic: The Gathering's Edge of Eternities set couldn't be more geared to my particular aesthetic sensibilities, Wizards of the Coast has rolled out 10 Special Guest cards for the set that resemble worn pulp sci-fi novel covers. While the artwork and graphic design of the cards is clearly geared towards evoking 50s, 60s, and 70s sci-fi covers, the design team for the set also added details to bring it all home. On the WeeklyMTG podcast, Blake Rasmussen described the cards resembling the covers of books that "you'd go to a flea market and you'd find sitting there for 50 cents." Art director Sarah Wassell said, "We added in the distressing to make them look like an old book cover. We added a lot of little graphic details around the edges, like you'll see some of them have stuff like scratched off price tags." Take a gander below at the Magus of the Moon Special Guest card.
