Magic: The Gathering believes the future is a diverse place, and Edge of Eternities was built to show that

Magic: The Gathering has put inclusivity at the core of its Edge of Eternities space-opera set

More people are playing Magic: The Gathering than ever before, so it's only natural that the artwork and themes for the cards reflect the diversity of the game's player base. While the art direction of Magic: The Gathering's themed sets often borrows from existing genres or movements within pop culture and art history, that doesn't mean that the subjects of these cards and sets have to be limited by the material they pull from. The latest example of this is with Magic's newest set: Edge of Eternities.

Edge of Eternities is a space-opera themed set, and its Special Guest cards take inspiration from sci-fi pulp novels from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. But that doesn't mean that the people featured in the artwork for these cards are all white men. In fact, the diversity of people featured in Edge of Eternities was a concerted choice on behalf of Wizards of the Coast.

Art director Sarah Wassell explained on the WeeklyMTG podcast that the team "had so much fun putting all kinds of people in space, not just white men, because that's probably what the majority of the pulp original covers of the 70s were [like]." Wassell was referring to the Special Guest version of the Burgeoning card by artist Stephen Andrade, which you can take a look at above.

Andrade's Special Guest card is one of 10 available for Edge of Eternities. You can find these cards in play booster and collector booster packs. Edge of Eternities is available now wherever cards are sold.
