Regardless of what you might think, making a game like Magic: The Gathering is hard. Every time a new card is introduced, it can interact with existing cards in unexpected ways. And, no matter how careful Wizards of the Coast is, there is always the possibility that cards will get shipped with the wrong text. Wizards of the Coast has acknowledged that the Diplomatic Relations card shipped in a broken state and is asking fans to fill in the missing text themselves.

In a statement on their website, Wizards of the Coast said that the Diplomatic Relations card from Edge of Eternities shipped with missing rules text that changed the way it played in the game. Currently, the card says, “Target creature gets +1/+0 and gains vigilance until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature an opponent controls.”

The text should read, “Target creature you control gets +1/+0 and gains vigilance until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target creature an opponent controls.”

You’ll notice that there is only one small change – Diplomatic Relations is only intended to target a creature that the user controls, giving them the buff mentioned in the text. This removes the possibility of using the card to select a powerful creature on your opponent’s board and making it target itself or another creature.

The corrected text has already been added to MTG Arena, Gatherer, and Magic Online, but it will be up to players to ensure they have the right text if they plan to play the Diplomatic Relations card in their deck. And to be aware of the rule change, just in case their opponent tries to use the incorrect text against them in a match.
