Two corrections officers are behind bars after they were caught in the midst of a crime spree involving over $3,000 in stolen Magic: The Gathering cards, LEGO sets, a handheld vacuum, a massager, and more.
Kaitlyn Thomas and Shaun Smith were apprehended on August 17, and what Bay County (Florida) sheriffs discovered was evidence that it was part of a string of thefts over the course of at least three weeks targeting various Walmarts in the area.
“In conducting our interview with the two individuals," investigator Chris Coram told local ABC affiliate WMBB's Gabriela Peniston, "they subsequently confessed to the fact that they had been frequently coming to Bay County and committing retail thefts at different Walmarts, stealing these same kind of consistent items, the Magic: The Gathering cards, Lego sets, and then a subsequent search warrant that also provided all that evidence back out of the vehicle."
According to police reports, the two individuals were identified using Walmart security cameras. Using those timestamps, the sheriffs used nearby Flock cameras to identify the car's tag number. With that, they were able to track the individuals, which led to a patrol officer pulling them over. They have been charged with "multiple counts of Grand Theft" according to the sheriff's office, and more charges could be filed as the investigation is still underway.
According to Coram, they have identified three Walmart locations where the duo stole merchandise, but there could be more stolen property from more locations beyond what they found in the suspects' vehicle.
“Well, we’re going to continue to try to recover more stolen property and identify locations where the stolen property could be," said Coram. "We do know that there had been prior bad acts consistent with this. So there would be more items that would be out there that we could possibly recover that."
