The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold more units in the first week than the Switch did in its first month
With 3.5 million units sold, the Switch 2 has become Nintendo's fastest-selling console ever - and there isn't even a new Mario game for it yet.

If Nintendo was worried that the Switch 2 was a bit too expensive for the current market or that it didn’t have the launch library that its predecessor had, those fears might be slightly abated. It has been less than a week since Nintendo’s new console launched and it has already sold more units than the original Switch sold in its first month.
Nintendo announced today that the Switch 2 has sold 3.5 million units in the first four days after its launch. This includes both the base console and the Mario Kart World bundle. That is an impressive number – representing nearly 25% of the total number of Switch 2s they expect to sell in the first year. According to Nintendo, this makes the Switch 2 their fastest-selling console ever.
While we don’t have like-for-like numbers for the Switch’s sales, Bloomberg has reported that the original Switch sold 2.7 million units within its first month back in 2017, meaning that the Switch 2 is off to an incredible start if it wants to replicate the success of the Switch.
There are some caveats to keep in mind here, though. The original Switch came out during a chip shortage, which massively slowed down production. This meant that for the first year, supply simply couldn’t keep up with demand and many people were on long wait lists to pick up a Switch. Nintendo has always said that they weren’t going to replicate that mistake with the Switch 2, which is why there haven’t been many reports of fans wanting to buy the console but being unable to.
Even with this advantage, the team at Nintendo deserves to congratulate themselves. Months of hype and years of development have put them in a strong position to make the next generation of consoles all about the Switch 2. Early adoption like this means that developers will have more incentive to make games for the Switch 2, which, in turn, will help drive console sales in the future. It is a lucrative cycle.
