If there is one thing that Netflix loves, it is a reality cooking show. They have enough of them to satisfy any appetite, but what they really need is more video game adaptations. Or, even better, a video game adaptation that is also a cooking show. That is what we’re getting when Netflix puts together a reality show based on the Overcooked video games, along with A24.
According to Deadline, A24, who are best known for award-winning scripted television and films, is teaming up with Netflix to create a reality cooking show based on Overcooked. The Ghost Town Games hit puts players into the most chaotic kitchens imaginable and asks them to prepare dishes ranging from a simple salad to burgers and pizza – all while contending with portals, lava flows, and high-speed traffic. The games are very fun, especially with other people, but like Monopoly and Thanksgiving dinner, they typically descend into screaming matches and thrown controllers.
We’re not expecting the Netflix version of Overcooked to force contestants to cook while navigating between hot air balloons, but we still hope they can capture the absolute chaos that is an Overcooked kitchen. We’re thinking shifting countertops and forcing cooks to throw dishes across barriers to complete meals. All while a wizened onion sits atop a throne, waiting for them to complete their quest.
It is still early days for the Overcooked adaptation from Netflix, so we don’t know many details. We know it will be an unscripted reality show, but there isn’t a release date or anything else confirmed in the reports. Gemma Langford, Oli D-Vine, and Phil Duncan from Ghost Town Games are said to be executive producing the series.
