Move over, Selfless Savior: There’s a new sad Magic: The Gathering card from Avatar: The Last Airbender that will make you cry

There are numerous strategies that one can take to defeat their opponent in Magic: The Gathering, but there is something to be said for the efficacy of psychological warfare. And no, I'm not talking about anything unethical, I'm talking about the power of emotions.
Magic: The Gathering cards are immensely diverse when it comes to tone, and there is a select group of cards that players consider to be the saddest of the sad. Think of the card Selfless Savior, for instance: you don't have to be a dachshund owner to get misty-eyed just from looking at the flavor text. And don't even talk to me about the dog version of Rest in Peace, it's too early for me to start crying.
It's only fitting, then, that Magic: The Gathering's crossover with Avatar: The Last Airbender would feature at least one tearjerker of a moment from the original show. The card Tale of Momo has taken up that burden. It depicts a sad moment from the Tales of Ba Sing Se episode from Avatar: The Last Airbender, where the adorable lemur character Momo sits sadly within the footprint of Appa. And if that wasn't sad enough, it's also raining. The flavor text on the card reads, "Rain filled Appa's pawprint, and despair filled Momo's heart." Argh! Take a look at the card below.

Tale of Momo will be available in Jumpstart packs for Avatar: The Last Airbender. Thankfully, it isn't Momo's only appearance in the set (how could it be?), and there are plenty of other cards where the beloved sidekick isn't doubled over in despair.
Magic: The Gathering x Avatar: The Last Airbender will be released on November 21, 2025.
