Remember the fantastical & the failures of SEGA's Dreamcast
Sega created the PS2 before the PS2 with its Dreamcast - but that wasn't enough to avoid the death of Sega's console dreams. Here is that story.

Popverse's top stories
- What to Watch September 2025: Wednesday season 2 wraps up on Netflix, Gen V returns to Prime Video, Only Murders in the Building is sluething about Hulu again, and so much more
- Simon Kinberg on writing X-Men movies, producing Glenn Powell's The Running Man remake, and co-creating Star Wars Rebels [Popversations]
- DC Studios president James Gunn originally wanted an actor other than John Cena for Peacemaker (but Cena won him over so much, he changed the character’s fate)
Dreams don't last forever, but my memories of the Sega Dreamcast do. Launched here in the US in 1999, it was the Playstation 2 before there was a Playstation 2, and opened the door to concepts we think of now as second nature such as DLC and online play. For me, the best games were the original Crazy Taxi and Power Stone - but those who played the console will each have thier own answer.
Recently at London's MCM x EGX, three gaming experts - Caspar Field, Keith Stuart, and Dreamcast: Year One and Year Two author Andrew Dickinson - spoke at length with games journalist Christopher Dring about the platform - the successes, what it inspired, and how it ended Sega's time as a console developer.
The 25 Years of Sega's Dreamcast panel is being made available free for all, as a preview of all the MCM x EGX 2024 panels that Popverse members get year-round, one of many benefits you have as a paid supporter.
