Blizzard has lots of plans for World of Warcraft's Housing, but it's more than just their version of Animal Crossing?
World of Warcraft's Housing gives players an unprecedented creative outlet within the game - not unlike Animal Crossing

Gamers around the world have found community while playing World of Warcraft over the past twenty years. And with the announcement of Housing earlier this year, players will have more and more opportunities to build their own home base - literally - within World of Warcraft. Housing was created in order for players to have a place where they can express themselves within the game, which is a sentiment we can certainly get behind. We're big Animal Crossing fans at Popverse, so the idea of having a customizable space within World of Warcraft where you can decorate your own home however you'd like is tantalizing.
At PAX East 2025's Evolving Azeroth panel, members of the WoW team at Blizzard said they have no plans to stop the Housing train any time soon. Jesse Kurlancheek, a Principal Designer on World of Warcraft, had this to say about what Blizzard has in store: "We are going to be building on housing for the foreseeable future. We have a very, very bulky roadmap full of stuff. The community response to it has been amazing in that we'll make a post, and we'll see this big discussion come up, and it will be like plucking: 'we should think about adding that, that seems like a good idea - put it on the roadmap.'"
The Housing team has entire channels "devoted to brainstorming and coming up with new stuff," Kurlancheek revealed, adding, "There has been no shortage of amazing ideas that are all just fighting with each other just to get on."
So will Housing become Animal Crossing within World of Warcraft? Maybe, but given Kurlancheek's statements, it could become something more. It's clear that Housing is being developed with fans' enjoyment and creativity in mind, piggybacking off of an enthusiasm that has percolated and persisted over the course of two decades. Given the amount of lore within WoW, Housing has the opportunity to become a monument to continued player interest in the game to begin with - rather than just providing a hermetically-sealed and standalone experience like the Animal Crossing games.
There's an additive and expansive nature to WoW, and giving players a space where they can design their own unique home bases feels dare I say more grounded than Animal Crossing, because WoW's Housing is inherently aware of how much time its players have invested in the world of its game. In other words, WoW knows that Azeroth lives in the heads of its players rent free. Now, the game is letting them transmute that into the digital realm.
I look forward to seeing what shenanigans World of Warcraft players come up with in Housing. After all, as Kurlancheek teased, "I think we'll be talking about some other things that people want to hear about very soon, too."
