Popverse's top stories of the day

The world of the kaiju is growing all the time, with humanity left trembling in their wake. With the next chapter in the ever-growing MonsterVerse not far away, we’re ready to see what happens when the two biggest characters in cinema history team up. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s release date is near and looks bigger than ever.

This is the fifth film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise that started with 2014’s Godzilla reboot. Once Kong: Skull Island established that the two creatures shared the planet, their conflict became inevitable. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will hit cinemas on March 29, 2024 in the US and the UK. Some international markets will get to see the movie on March 27, but others, like Japan, will have to wait until April to see what new threats the pair are facing.

What that new threat is has been kept suitably vague in the trailers for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The uneasy truce the previous film, Godzilla vs. Kong, ended in seems to be holding up, though we’d be surprised if the pair didn’t tussle at least once in the new movie before deciding to team up one more time.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire comes at a time when Godzilla is enjoying surprising critical success around the world, with Godzilla Minus One – which is not affiliated with the MonsterVerse continuity – walking away with the iconic monster’s first Oscar trophy.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is due out on March 29, 2024 in the US and the UK.

Whichever giant monster is your favorite, Popverse has you covered. We have a guide to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's ending (and what it means for the broader MonsterVerse), as well as watch orders for both Legendary's MonsterVerse and Godzilla's overall movies, as well as why Godzilla Minus One left theaters early (and why New Empire could be to blame!), and if you're a Popverse premium member, a New York Comic Con-exclusive interview with the cast and crew of Legendary's kaiju-hunting drama Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
