Good Omens: The end is nigh (again) as Amazon reveals season 2 release date

The return of the apocalyptic comedy Good Omens starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen is a-getting closer

The end is nigh. Again.

Amazon Prime Video has announced that the long-awaited second season of Good Omens, the series based on the beloved '90s prose novel co-written by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett, will arrive July 28. The news was broken via Instagram, accompanying a new poster for the season showing Michael Sheen’s Aziraphale and David Tennant’s Crowley sitting together in imperfect harmony, accompanied by a new tagline for the series: “Everyday it’s a-getting closer.”

But.. what is getting closer, exactly? The end of the world was seemingly avoided by the end of the previous season — which adapted the original '90s book — although the cast of characters responsible for the near-extinction event were left to their own devices. Talking to Popverse’s Tiffany Babb at Emerald City Comic Con earlier this year, Tennant said that “Neil will tell you that he and Terry had talked about the potential for a sequel,” and that “Terry’s ideas are very much a part” of the new season, although just what those ideas are remain a mystery for now…

Good Omens Season 2

The new season has been co-written by Gaiman and British comedy writer John Finnemore, who has previously worked on shows including That Mitchell and Webb Look, Dead Ringers, and iconic British radio shows Just A Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

One last thing about the new teaser image: the logo for the show now reads “Good Omens 2,” as opposed to “Good Omens Season 2.” Should we consider this an official sequel, rather than a continuation of what came before…?

Good Omens 2 — or season 2 of Good Omens, depending on your preference — will debut July 28. Expect a lot more on Popverse about the series as we approach that date.
