The world of The Handmaid’s Tale has never been a pretty one, but that is what makes it both important and unmissable television. With the news that the sixth season of Hulu’s hit drama is going to be its last, there is still something to look forward to for fans. Margaret Atwood wrote a sequel to her 1985 dystopian classic called The Testaments, which is also getting a series based on it.
From its release date to what it is about, here is everything we know about Hulu’s The Testaments. Be warned that we’ll be discussing some potential spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale going forward.
What is The Testaments?
The Testaments is an upcoming sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale. Set 15 years after the events of the original book, it is based on the 2019 novel by Margaret Atwood. Rather than follow the story of June, it is about the actions of three women. Aunt Lydia, Agnes/Hannah, and Daisy/Nicole, each of whom will be familiar to fans of The Handmaid’s Tale..
The Testaments takes place in the gap between the final chapter of The Handmaid's Tale, which was adapted at the end of season one of The Handmaid’s Tale series, and its epilogue, which takes place decades into the future and reveals the eventual fate of Gilead along with some context to June’s story. While The Handmaid’s Tale has continued significantly past the original novel’s final chapter, there will still be a sizable gap between the finale and when The Testaments is likely to take place.
When will The Testaments come out?
With the release date for the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale likely to be pushed back to 2025, it is difficult to know exactly when The Testaments will go into production let alone when it will come out. Star and producer Elizabeth Moss recently confirmed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that they were hoping to resume filming in the summer of 2024. While Hulu could try to produce both series at the same time, we think it is more likely that The Testaments will be filmed well after season six of The Handmaid’s Tale, making a 2026 release date more likely.
Who is in The Testaments cast?
As the series is still in early development, there haven’t been many casting announcements made about The Testaments. The only cast member who has been confirmed is Ann Dowd, who portrays Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid’s Tale.
