The man in the hat is back for one final globe-trotting adventure, and fans at Disney’s D23 Expo 2022 were among the first to get to see what kind of scrapes Indiana Jones is getting into in his fifth big-screen outing.

Attendees to the annual D23 event might have suspected some kind of update on the next Indiana Jones movie — the first one in more than a decade, since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008 — after the iconic costume and concept art from the movie were sighted on display in the main hall at the show. On Saturday morning, all was revealed.

In addition to the main man himself, Harrison Ford, the fifth Indiana Jones movie stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Toby Jones and The Sandman’s Boyd Holbrook. The movie is written by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth (Ford vs. Ferrari, Edge of Tomorrow) in collaboration with the film’s director, James Mangold (Logan).

Mangold and stars Ford and Waller-Bridge were onstage at D23 Expo to tease the movie, in addition to an exclusive sizzle reel shared only with attendees. (Unfortunately.) Mangold talked about the fact that the original Raiders of the Lost Ark was “one of the reasons I became a film director,” and added that just yesterday, he’d been talking with John Williams because music work on the movie has just started.

"Indiana Jones movies are about mystery, adventure, they're also about heart,” said a visibly emotional Ford. “I’m very proud to say that this one is fantastic, [and] this is one of the reasons,” he added, gesturing to co-star Waller-Bridge. For her part, Waller-Bridge said that she had “the time of my life making this movie,” joking that keeping up with Ford was exhausting.

Showing just how proud he is of the project, Ford told the excited crowd, “I’m so happy we have a human story to tell and a movie that will kick your ass."

In some ways, D23 Expo is a three-day live version of Disney's streaming service Disney+. TV shows, movies, and specials from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios, National Geographic, and more are on the streaming service.

Indiana Jones 5 - still, as yet, officially untitled - is scheduled for release June 30, 2023.
