Jack Black is set to rock your blocks off (get it?) in the upcoming Minecraft movie

Hopefully the Creepers don't get him first

Video game adaptations are big business at the moment. The Super Mario Movie set box office records last year, while The Last of Us managed to reduce us all to tears, and that’s before Five Nights at Freddy’s scared the pants off of us. Warner Bros. is hoping that trend continues into 2025 with its Minecraft movie, which has announced that Jack Black is joining the cast alongside the already-announced Jason Momoa and Emma Myers.

Plot details of the Minecraft movie are still tightly under wraps, so we’re not entirely sure who Black is playing in the film. Deadline broke the news of the casting, saying that the Kung Fu Panda star could be filling in the role of Steve, but nothing has been officially confirmed. Though it started with a minimal plot and a focus on exploration and creativity when it launched in 2011, Minecraft has since added multiple story modes to flesh out its world so Black could be playing any number of roles.

Jack Black seems happy to continue starring in video game adaptations for the foreseeable future. In 2023, he brought one of the most iconic gaming villains to life when he played Bowser in Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and he’s already been announced as part of the Borderlands movie cast as Claptrap. The natural progression for this career trajectory is obviously for him to play Ganondorf in the recently announced Legend of Zelda film, right?

Minecraft is directed by Jared Hess, who has previously worked with Black in 2006 with Nacho Libre, and is currently set for an April 4, 2025 release date.
