Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes age rating: How dark is the series going to get?

Its not just monkey business.

As we get closer to the summer blockbuster season, more films will be fighting for our attention and, more importantly, our box office dollars. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes looks to capitalize on its earlier release date to capture cinema-goers' attention, but should you be taking your kids to see the latest entry in the long-running series? Normally, we’d look at Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ age rating but there is a bit of a catch.

At the time of writing, the MPAA hasn’t issued an age rating for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. This isn’t unusual for movies this far ahead of their release, but it does mean that we need to do a bit of speculation to figure out the eventual age rating for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Thankfully, it is part of a long-running series so we know roughly what to expect.

The first three movies in the current Planet of the Apes films that started with the 2011 reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, were all rated PG-13, citing the violence that comes from two species battling for supremacy on the planet. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will follow the same pattern, most film series try to keep roughly the same age ratings to help them grow a consistent audience.

We won’t know the official age rating until closer to the May 10, 2024 release date for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
