In the Studio at New York Comic Con 2025, Popverse’s Ashley V. Robinson got the chance to interview legendary author and Baby-Sitters Club creator Ann M. Martin. The conversation was especially exciting because it was Martin’s first-ever visit to a comic convention. During their chat, Robinson and Martin covered a plethora of topics. These included Martin’s advice for aspiring writers.
Martin was responding to a question asked by Robinson. “You’ve dropped so much great advice,” Robinson said. “But do you have any advice for aspiring creatives who maybe want to be Ann M. Martin someday?”
“What I most often tell young people who are interested in writing is that one of the most important things you can do is become familiar with all different kinds of writing,” Martin answered. “Read fiction, nonfiction, poetry, journalism, fantasy.”
But Martin wasn’t done. “And also, another piece of advice is to keep a journal,” she continued. “Because I think one of the complaints I hear most often from kids, even kids who like writing, is that they don’t know what to write about. And if you have a journal, it’s just a great source of story starters.”
