To read a Gillian Flynn story is to walk away thinking, 'I feel bad, but I feel human (complimentary).' With books like Sharp Objects and Gone Girl, Flynn has made a name for herself as not only one of the world's bestselling thriller writers, but one that looks deeply into the different forms of violence that exist within our world. For Flynn, the thrills within her stories aren't empty gestures. They're opportunities for readers to consider how the darkest parts of human behavior continue to persist. Now, Flynn is providing an opportunity for other thriller writers to carry this torch with the launch of her new imprint, Gillian Flynn Books.
As reported by People, Flynn says that her new imprint seeks to "help [...] unique voices get to the market," specifically focusing on "different, quirky mindsets and different types of characters that you don't always read about." One of the imprint's first releases will be Glass Girls by Danie Shokoohi, about "a woman with witchy abilities who's escaped from an abusive family that comes back to haunt her."
Flynn noted that her imprint will publish books that "you immediately want to talk to your friend about," which I would argue is one of the most rewarding aspects about the thriller genre. I can't tell you how many times I've been reading a book and live-texted one of my friends my reactions to all the wildest plot twists - even though they hadn't even read the book. There's something uniquely communal about thrillers that makes us want to share them with other people. When I read Graham Greene's Brighton Rock in college, I couldn't walk around and keep Pinkie Brown's actions to myself. Of course I had to tell my roommate all about it. Gillian Flynn just gets it.
Glass Girls by Danie Shokoohi will be released on June 24 by Gillian Flynn Books, an imprint of the publisher Zando.
