R.L. Stine originally planned to end the Goosebumps series after the first three books (until the sales exploded)

R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps was originally going to be a two or three book series (but the sales numbers changed everything)

How many Goosebumps books are there? It depends on how you classify them. The original children’s horror series was 62 books, but that number grows after you count the spinoffs. Once you factor in series like Goosebumps HorrorLand, Give Yourself Goosebumps, and Goosebumps Series 2000, the number grows to over 200.

“I lost track. It’s obnoxious, but I don’t know how many. A lot of books,” Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine tells Popverse’s Grant DeArmitt at New York Comic Con 2025.

However, it’s interesting to note that the number could’ve been much lower. When R.L. Stine began writing the series, he only planned to do two or three books. However, the strong reaction to the early books turned the children’s horror series into a popular franchise.

“It’s the 33rd year of Goosebumps. Can you believe that? I have to tell you Grant, when we started out, I said let’s do two or three. I said we’ll do a couple, and now 33 years later I’m still writing this stuff.”
