The writer of acclaimed horror novel Mexican Gothic couldn’t be happier when Hulu’s adaptation of her book fell through - “I was glad when nobody cared about me anymore.”
Silvia Moreno-Garcia's book Mexican Gothic generated buzz in 2020 when it was released, and then picked up by Hulu

These days, Hollywood is powered by adaptations. Whether it's adaptations of comics, graphic novels, articles, or novels, creatives in Hollywood have an easier time getting projects off the ground if it's based around an existing property. It's not surprising, then, that Silvia Moreno-Garcia's hit 2020 horror novel Mexican Gothic was picked up by Hulu for an adaptation.
Despite the popularity of Mexican Gothic, Hulu's adaptation of Moreno-Garcia's novel still fell through. In 2024, Moreno-Garcia posted onto her Instagram that, "Hulu did not renew the option for Mexican Gothic: so no show will be made. I appreciate the hard work of everyone in trying to bring it to the screen. Hopefully it gets adapted in the future."
Now, in a new profile for The New York Times, Moreno-Garcia reveals that she feels differently about the adaptation that nearly was. The article noted that, "When it was optioned as a potential series for Hulu, Moreno-Garcia began to get unsolicited messages from strangers — including one man who sent her a shirtless photo — hoping to be cast on the show." The author is quoted as saying, "I was glad when nobody cared about me anymore."
It isn't difficult to imagine how overwhelming it must have been for Moreno-Garcia to get randos sliding into her DMs with unsolicited photos of themselves. After all, let's remember that the queen herself, Sally Rooney, doesn't use social media and lives in the same town in County Mayo, Ireland, that she was born and raised in. I get it.
Moreno-Garcia has a new book out called The Bewitching, with a media-friendly hook: a multi-generational story of three witches in the same family. Maybe Hulu may swoop again for another adaptation. Who knows?
