How Stephen King blew up Wolverine writer Benjamin Percy's phone, and kickstarted his writing career

Before they collaborated on their novel, The End Times, Stephen King and Benjamin Percy first linked up over social media

If you're a Stephen King fan, you might know that the legendary writer is active on social media, where he frequently shares recommendations of books, television shows, and movies that he's enjoyed. It's how I got into the French TV show Marianne, for instance. But what happens when you're on the receiving end of King's viral appreciation, though? For writer Benjamin Percy, your phone doesn't stop going off.

Speaking to our video producer, Ashley Victoria Robinson, as part of the members-only video interview series, Popversations, Benjamin Percy spoke about how Stephen King and he first crossed paths over social media, as well as how they ended up collaborating on their upcoming serialized novel, The End Times.

“I used to be a professor in my former life, and I was in class, and I was teaching this workshop, and my phone was just buzzing away. I thought the world had come to an end, but it turns out afterwards that Stephen King had just tweeted about me, tweeted about [Percy's book] Red Moon," Percy said.

Percy was able to connect with King, and they've been connected ever since.

"I wanted to respect the boundary of the King of course, but he's been very generous, he's blurbed other books of mine, I've interviewed him onstage at a literary festival, and I hesitated to ask, because 5,000 people are asking Stephen King for something every day... I reached out, he's a very generous person, he said, 'Yes, I'll help you out, I'll give you some ideas, so he's been consulting on [The End Times], but he's also been writing. He has a byline in it."
