Higher. Further. Faster.
On the surface, they seem like three words, but when spoken together they carry a deeper meaning. It’s about empowerment. It’s about perseverance. It’s about heart.
The phrase first became attached to Captain Marvel during Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez’s run on the character. It was later incorporated into the promotional campaign for the 2019 Captain Marvel film. As you can imagine, higher, further, faster is something personal for Brie Larson. However, recently her outlook on the phrase has changed.
Speaking to a crowd at Fan Expo Denver, Larson said that conventions have given the phrase a new meaning for her. “These events have changed what those words mean to me. I’ve learned how many different ways they could mean to people. And when I was making the film, all I wanted was to create a symbol and some phrases, a language that people could take and use.”
“It meant empowerment, it meant strength, it meant they could do it, that they had nothing to prove. These are the events where I actually get to understand that it is happening. You may think that I understand, but I don’t, because I’m not there when you’re in the theater.”
“I’m not there when you’re talking to your friends. So these are the times when I feel like I get to go, ‘Wow, look at how it lives. Look at all these different incredible remarkable beautiful strong people in this world that are doing incredible things.’ That in a nutshell is what it means to me.”
It’s a beautiful sentiment, showing just how powerful the phrase is. Whether you’re a Kree warrior, a Hollywood actress, or an average citizen, we all strive to go higher, further, and faster.
