The latest entry in the sprawling Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is set to release in just a few months, so it was about time for Bandai Namco Filmworks to drop a new trailer to keep fans excited. The newest teaser for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM seeks to do exactly that, offering epic clashes between giant robots in space but showcasing very little of the actual plot of the movie.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM is a film sequel to both the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and SEED DESTINY anime series, taking place a year after the events of SEED DESTINY. The new movie continues the story of Kira Yamato as he continues to fight for freedom in a setting where humanity has split into two distinct and warring races. The movie has been in various stages of development since 2006, with a long delay due to the health concerns and untimely death of head writer Chiaki Morosawa.
While the previous trailers showcased the battle between freedom and destiny that Kira struggles with during the original Gundam SEED series, this one focuses entirely on showing how cool giant robot battles look in space. And they do look cool here, with new, outlandish weaponry, transformation sequences, and the required huge explosions. Probably to help sell the inevitable figurines from the film, there are a lot of long, lingering shots of the mobile suits, particularly the new design of Kira’s in the opening seconds. There are two lines of dialogue in the trailer and they give nothing away about what fans can expect when the movie finally hits the big screen on January 26, 2024.
The previous entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series finished in 2005, so fans have been waiting nearly 20 years for the conclusion to the story. Mobile Suit Gundam films and series tend to have a good balance between action and plot so we really hope that trend continues here.
