Netflix is making you pay extra to watch Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone flirt in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

In a moment of hysterical comic book irony, there's now a Spider-Man movie online that Peter Parker himself might not be able to afford. At least, that would be the case if, due to his humble newspaper photographer salary, ol' Spidey was subscribed to the cheapest, ad-supported tier of Netflix. A tier that, as of this writing, will no longer allow viewers to stream Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield.
We first heard about the recent upcharge from the folks at Collider, who reported on the news January 5. According to the outlet, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is one of 145 movies that are inaccessible to those with the cheapest Netflix plan as of this first month of 2026, though the site doesn't provide a full list of those titles.
Now, I'd be willing to bet my own Spidey pajamas that some of you may be reading this thinking, "Who's going to pay extra for The Amazing Spider-Man 2?" And honestly, we're not sure we can answer that question definitively. Remember, the movie was a critical flop when it came out in 2014, even though people had previously adored Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey, respectively, in the movie's predecessor.
However, after Garfield returned to the role in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home, a certain subsect of the Wall-Crawler's fanbase have looked more graciously upon the movie, going so far as o call for a Webb/Garfield reunion in a (very much imaginary) Amazing Spider-Man 3. And while that's extremely unlikely to happen anytime soon, Garfield has spoken about his willingness to return for one of Sony's animated Spider-Verse movies.
All I'm saying is that Netflix's choice to bump the film off its cheapest plan will no doubt leave the film's devotees upset, though if it's part of a plan to get those fans paying more, I can't guarantee its success. Instead, hardcore fans might just be more likely to switch over to Disney+, where the film is also streaming, and for a tier supported by ads.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is streaming on Netflix now... for some subscribers, at least.
