Amazon's Highlander remake gifts the world the Man of Steel reunion no one saw coming

Russell Crowe has gone from playing Superman's dad Jor-El to the Pope's Exorcist, and now the mentor to Henry Cavill's character in the Highlander remake

Latter-day Russell Crowe has delighted me. Okay, maybe I shouldn't even say "latter-day" because Russell Crowe's entire career delights me, but over the last few years, he's welcomed a sense of goofiness that's utterly charming. For instance, his entire vibe and Italian accent in The Pope's Exorcist. Any movie where he does an accent, I'm there.

And now, Collider reports that Russell Crowe has boarded Amazon's Highlander remake starring Henry Cavill. Crowe will reportedly be playing the mentor figure to Cavill's hero, akin to the role that Sean Connery played in the original film. Now we can all look forward to seeing Russell Crowe do an accent for this film. Whatever accent choice he ends up making, it's going to be better than whatever the hell Christopher Lambert did in the original Highlander.

The Highlander remake reunites Crowe and Cavill, who first appeared together in 2013's Man of Steel film. Crowe played Jor-El, Superman's father, in an extended sequence in the beginning of the film on Krypton. We saw him ride around on a winged creature, which I don't think any of us were expecting from a Superman movie. With Gladiator II still fresh in our minds, it will be good to see Crowe presumably pick up a sword again.

Amazon's Highlander film is set to be directed by Chad Stahelski, best known for directing the John Wick films. Stahelski has an impressive résumé of action films, and I wouldn't bet against him. It's perhaps also worth noting that Clancy Brown, who played the big baddie from the original Highlander, appeared in Stahelski's John Wick: Chapter 4. So it's all circular.
